Humber River Golf Club

The Course

Located alongside the Humber River near the Deer Lake Airport, Humber River Golf Club is a 9-hole course that is perfect for players of all skill levels.

The secluded atmosphere and shorter length makes HRGC a great choice for beginners, while the narrow, tree-lined fairways and small greens can challenge even the most experienced players.

The Course

Hole 1

The opening hole at Humber River is more challenging than it originally appears. At only 313 yards (from the middle tees), players may think they are in for an easy opening hole. However, with thick forest down both sides of the fairway and a slight dogleg right, golfers will have to decide if they want to layup short of the dogleg or test their ability to shape the ball left-to-right.

While the green doesn’t have any bunkers, it is well protected by trees close behind and tight to the left hand side. Any errant approach shots may make scrambling very difficult.

Red Tees – 274 yards

White Tees – 313 yards

Blue Tees – 364 yards

Handicap 11

Hole 2

HRGC’s second hole is a little shorter than the first at 291 yards, but has a more significant dogleg, this time to the left. Longer hitters can take on the green in one, but better be able to shape the ball right-to-left. The forested area to the left of the fairway has a steep drop off soon after the tree line, so missing left is not an option.

This green is well protected, slight elevated from the fairway, and with trees tight to the left and behind, along with two greenside bunkers on the right side.

Red Tees – 254 yards

White Tees – 291 yards

Blue Tees – 338 yards

Hole 3

The third hole at Humber River Golf Club can truly make or break a round. It is a very short par 4 at 244 yards. However, it is an extreme dogleg right and players can take on the green in one if they feel daring enough to go over the trees. Even a cautious tee shot faces some challenges, with a hazard running down the entire left side of the fairway and trees tight to the right side.

Players face an approach shot into a slightly elevated green with a greenside bunker to the left. Hole #3 is home to one of Humber River’s smallest greens, so players need to be accurate and confident in their yardage.

Red Tees – 168 yards

White Tees – 244 yards

Blue Tees – 296 yards

Hole 4

The first of two Par 5s at HRGC, the fourth hole runs parallel with the Humber River itself. Players can see the river itself from the tee and along most of the fairway, but it shouldn’t come into play unless you hit a very errant tee shot. At 463 yards, this Par 5 is gettable in two, but it will take an excellent drive into a fairway running slightly uphill for the first half.

Players face an approach shot into a green that is one of the course’s largest, but is oriented in a way that makes it play much smaller. The green sits higher than the rest of the hole and any approach shots that are short risk going into the large greenside bunker.

Red Tees – 424 yards

White Tees – 463 yards

Blue Tees – 507 yards

Hole 5

Hole #5 at Humber River Golf Club is its longest relative to par, at 384 yards. It is a very narrow fairway with the course’s entrance road running parallel to the left. Players have to be cautious of the fairway bunker on the right side of the hole, as finding yourself in it can severely restrict your ability to hit the green in regulation.

This green is the course’s largest with a deep greenside bunker hugging the right side. Players need to pay close attention to where the pin is located, as the depth of this green can greatly impact the approach shot yardage.

Red Tees – 336 yards

White Tees – 384 yards

Blue Tees – 424 yards

Hole 6

The course’s first Par 3, hole #6 comes in at 160 yards. However, it can sometimes appear shorter than it is, resulting in many players coming up short and flirting with the very deep greenside bunker.

This green has hazards located long and right in addition to trees to the left, making it a more difficult approach than it may first appear. This hole was home to the most impressive achievement the course has ever seen, with longtime member Phyllis Schwartz hitting a hole-in-one there on back-to-back days in the summer of 2003.

Red Tees – 112 yards

White Tees – 160 yards

Blue Tees – 160 yards

Handicap

Hole 7

Hole #7 is one of the course’s toughest tee shots. With overhanging trees on the right side, a hazard area between the tee blocks and fairway, and a ditch and trees running down the left side, this tee shot is a significant test of accuracy. At only 312 yards, players have to be very careful choosing their strategy off the tee.

The approach shot does not get much easier, as most of the front of the green is protected by a bunker, requiring players to fly it onto a narrow green and stop it quickly. Going long of this green is not an option as there is a steep drop off into a hazard area behind the green.

Red Tees – 280 yards

White Tees – 312 yards

Blue Tees – 345 yards

Handicap

Hole 8

HRGC’s second last hole is a challenging Par 3 that has derailed many good rounds over the years. At 170 yards, hole #8 makes you take more club than you’d like into a Par 3 while being very unforgiving around the green.

The green is protected short and left by a greenside bunker, left and long by a hazard leading to a pond, and to the right side by bushes and trees. The only comfortable miss here is short which would still leave you a difficult chip into a sloped green.

Red Tees – 124 yards

White Tees – 170 yards

Blue Tees – 170 yards

Handicap

Hole 9

The final hole at Humber River Golf Club is its longest, a 474 yard Par 5. With a slight dogleg left off the tee and a hazard running through the middle of the fairway at the hole’s halfway point, players have to be careful with their tee shots and decision making.

While the green is reachable in two for longer hitters, there is still a greenside bunker protecting the front-right of the green to contend with. For those choosing to layup, they will have to be careful not to find themselves in the fairway bunker on the left. Situated directly in front of the Clubhouse and its patio, players may then have to endure the pressure of making their final putts in front of a gallery.

Red Tees – 448 yards

White Tees – 473 yards

Blue Tees – 502 yards
